Ramayampet farmers block highway over irregular power supply

HYDERABAD: Farmers staged a road blockade outside an electricity sub-station in Ramayampet, Medak district, on Friday. They alleged that irregular power supply was affecting irrigation of their paddy crop.
The protest took place on the Ramayampet–Elkathurthy National Highway. Farmers demanded a regular supply of electricity for agriculture. The blockade disrupted traffic for about two hours, according to a report published by Namasthe Telangana on October 3, 2026.
Farmers raise concerns over paddy crop
The farmers said they were not receiving the required eight hours of agricultural power. They alleged that officials claimed to provide eight hours of supply. However, farmers said they had no clear information about power cuts or restoration.
They said the paddy crop had reached a crucial stage and needed timely irrigation. They feared that repeated power interruptions could affect the crop and cause losses.
The farmers also said they had repeatedly approached officials over the issue. They claimed that their requests had not resolved the problem. They demanded a regular power supply during irrigation hours.
Police talks lead to withdrawal of blockade
Ramayampet Sub-Inspector Balaraj reached the spot after receiving information about the protest. He spoke to the farmers and discussed their concerns.
Following the talks, the farmers withdrew the road blockade. Traffic movement resumed on the highway, the report said.
Ramayampet is a mandal in Medak district, according to the district administration website. Electricity data from the district administration lists 90,521 agricultural services in the Medak operation circle. It also shows that agriculture accounts for the largest share of electricity consumption.
Harish Rao questions government over power supply
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader T Harish Rao also criticised the Telangana government over the reported power shortage.
In a social media statement, Harish Rao referred to the Ramayampet protest and questioned the government’s handling of agricultural power supply.
He said, “You said you’d bring back the days of yore .. and you’ve truly brought back the days of those old power cuts!”
Harish Rao also alleged that the government had failed to provide even six hours of power. He questioned what would happen to farmers if their crops dried up.
He further said farmers had been forced to stage a dharna outside the Ramayampet sub-station. He urged the government to ensure irrigation water and quality power for farmers.
The comments reflect Harish Rao’s criticism of the state government and are presented as his claims.
The Ramayampet protest comes amid other farmer demonstrations over agricultural power supply in parts of Telangana. Some of these protests have also involved demonstrations at electricity substations and road blockades.
