Parks in Rahmatnagar turn into dumping grounds

RAHMATNAGAR: Parks set up for public recreation in Rahmatnagar have fallen into neglect, turning into hubs for anti-social activities. Two Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation parks on the Sriramnagar main road remain poorly maintained.
With no upkeep, wild vegetation has grown unchecked and boundary walls have collapsed. The parks have become parking spaces for vehicles, while some locals have converted them into cricket grounds.
Maintenance responsibility was recently shifted from the engineering department to the horticulture department. Lack of coordination between the departments has delayed upkeep.
Some individuals use the parks for consuming alcohol and ganja, creating safety concerns. Residents said they fear going near the parks at night. Passersby also dump waste inside the premises.
Residents seek road widening and park facilities
On the Rahmatnagar–Motinagar stretch, parks were developed along road dividers on both sides. However, encroachments between Mubarak Hotel and the Sriramnagar Anjaneya Swamy Temple have narrowed the road.
Though both sides of the road near the parks are meant for use, only one side is currently accessible, while the other faces encroachments. Residents have demanded restoration of roads on both sides, along with walking tracks and open gyms in the parks.
Development works to begin soon, says official
L Srinivas, horticulture manager, Borabanda circle, said development works have been awarded to a contractor. “We will develop the parks with walking tracks and greenery. Maintenance responsibility will be handed over to residents,” he added.
