Ragpicker killed in explosion in garbage dump in Kushaiguda

Hyderabad: A 37-year-old ragpicker was killed in a mysterious explosion at a garbage dump in Kushaiguda on Saturday. The incident was captured on an electronic surveillance camera installed at a nearby shop across the road. The CCTV footage of the incident has now gone viral on social media platforms.
The deceased was identified as S Nagaraju, a resident of Neredmet, who earned his livelihood by collecting plastic waste from the garbage.
The police said while cleaning garbage, the local ragpicker may have come across some unknown chemicals in the dump which likely triggered the blast.
The impact of the blast was so intense that Nagaraju was hurled into the air and he landed at a distance. He sustained critical injuries in the blast and died on the spot.
The explosion took place in a garbage dump near a transformer in the area. A forensic team collected samples of exploded material from the blast site and sent them for analysis, the official said.
In a related incident in January, a 35-year-old woman named Neelamma was injured after a container she found in a garbage dump exploded. It was reported that an attempt to open a container in the garbage dump at Ranga Reddy Nagar in Balanagar caused the explosion.
Neelamma received minor injuries on her lower limbs. She was admitted to a nearby hospital and her condition was stated to be stable.
As per reports, as usual Neelamma was clearing the garbage heaps to find the discarded items and she found a small metal container which possibly contained some chemical substance. The container exploded with a huge noise when she tapped on it with a stick. The blast echoed through the locality leading to a panic situation among the local residents.
