Rachakonda police to conduct checks for drunk driving on ORR

Listen to Story

Hyderabad: As many lives are getting lost due to drunk driving, Rachakonda police have decided to crack down on driving under the influence of alcohol. Ensuring a safe driving environment and preventing these deaths, the police will soon begin conducting tests for drunk driving at the entry and exit points of the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

Outer Ring Road has been notoriously dubbed a death trap due to frequent fatal road accidents. Recently, a young doctor working at the LV Prasad Eye Hospital was killed in a tragic road mishap. Most of the deaths on this controlled access road are either due to overspeeding or involve drunk driving.

Over the past few months, the Rachakonda police studied the fatal accidents which took place on the ORR. The analysis of these deadly accidents concluded that reckless driving and drunk driving emerged as two major factors behind these road mishaps. The police have also formed a team for accident analysis and prevention which will assist them in reducing the fatal accidents on the Outer Ring Road.

Notably, drunk driving is an offense under the Motor Vehicles Act. Offenders will be fined Rs. 10,000 or have to serve 6 months in jail. Additionally, the RTO will suspend the driving licenses of repeat violators for 3 months or permanently, depending on the severity of the violation.
