Hyderabad: Veteran film producer Dil Raju has apologized for his controversial comments regarding Telangana’s cultural preferences, which sparked criticism. The controversial comments were made during the trailer launch of Sankranthiki Vasthunnam in Nizamabad on January 6, 2025.

Dil Raju expressed regret over his earlier comments, clarifying that he did not intend to disrespect the traditions of Telangana. He explained, “I was referring to the cultural significance of toddy and mutton when I spoke about Telangana. My remarks were not meant to be negative.”

He further stated, “I have a deep respect for the culture, and I apologize if my comments offended anyone. I did not intend to hurt anyone with my words during the trailer launch.”

Dil Raju also discussed his involvement with the movie Fidaa, saying it represented Telangana’s culture in a positive light. He highlighted, “If my comments hurt anyone, I sincerely apologize.”

The producer also clarified that he was recently appointed Chairman of the Telangana Film Development Corporation and requested that people not politicize the situation. “I am focused on supporting the film industry,” he said.

Earlier, Dil Raju’s comment comparing the cultural vibe in Andhra Pradesh to that in Telangana stirred controversy. He remarked, “If we go to Andhra, the people there will create a vibe for a movie, but in Telangana, the vibe is centered around toddy and mutton.” His statement was criticized for oversimplifying and misrepresenting the cultural identity of Telangana.

MLC Deshapati Srinivas condemned Dil Raju’s remarks, saying the producer had no involvement in the Telangana movement and lacked an understanding of the region’s cultural and political landscape.

“Dil Raju has never supported the Telangana cause. Now, he is commenting on its culture,” Srinivas stated, adding, “If Telangana doesn’t have a vibe, he should stop making movies here and open a toddy shop or meat stall if he’s looking for one.”

The controversy comes ahead of the release of Sankranthiki Vasthunnam, a film produced by Dil Raju and presented by his banner, Sri Venkateswara Creations. The movie, directed by Anil Ravipudi, stars Venkatesh in a mass role. Set for release on January 14, 2025, during the Sankranti festival, the film features a unique triangular story with crime elements.
