Hyderabad: As part of the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad celebrated a two-week programme themed “Swachhata Hi Seva Hai.” On September 24, 2024, approximately 250 students from Grades 1 and 2 at Premia Academy School in Attapur participated in the Swachhata Pledge at the zoo’s Golden Jubilee Pylon.

Dr. Sunil S. Hiremath, IFS, Director (FAC) of Zoo Parks and Curator of Nehru Zoological Park, briefed the students on the zoo’s role in the conservation of wild animals. Following this, the students watched a film about wildlife screened in the Bioscope Hall.

The students also participated in a snake awareness show at the reptile house, where M. Deepak Tarun, Executive Officer, provided insights into various snake species.

The event was attended by several officers and staff, including M. Barnoba, Deputy Curator; Amrutha, Assistant Curator-2; Madhavilatha, Deputy Range Officer; Venkat Rao, Forest Section Officer; and H. M. Hanifulla, Public Relations Officer, all from Nehru Zoological Park.

Nehru Zoological Park, located near Mir Alam Tank in Bahadurpura, Telangana, is one of Hyderabad’s most visited destinations. Construction of the park began on October 26, 1959, and it opened to the public on October 6, 1963. Managed by the Forest Department of the Government of Telangana, the zoo is named after India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Covering 380 acres, the park is adjacent to the 600-acre Mir Alam Tank, which attracts hundreds of migratory birds, adding to the zoo’s allure. The zoo is home to nearly 100 species of birds, animals, and reptiles, including many indigenous species. Notably, the nocturnal house at the zoo artificially reverses night and day, allowing nocturnal animals to be active while visitors are present.

Since 2014, the zoo has operated an adoption program, enabling individuals and corporations to adopt animals or entire enclosures, contributing to their upkeep.
