Hyderabad’s energy demand surges 23 percent as urban growth drives winter consumption

Hyderabad's energy demand surges

Hyderabad: In recent times, Hyderabad’s electricity consumption has seen an increase reaching unprecedented levels. Within a year, the city has witnessed a significant shift in its energy requirements. The city and its surrounding areas have reported a staggering 23 percent increase in power demand compared to the same period last year.

Usually, the demand for electricity increases during the summer, however, the statistics this November show a reverse in the trend. According to the officials, the surge in electricity consumption during winters can be attributed to rapid urbanization as new residential colonies and commercial establishments are coming up across the Greater Hyderabad region.

The Cyber City division—comprising areas like Gachibowli, Kondapur, and Kokapet—has seen a 33 percent rise in power consumption, while the Medchal division reported a 31 percent spike, according to the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSPDCL). Additionally, areas such as Rajendranagar, Shamshabad, and Hyderabad South have experienced a 20 percent  increase in energy demand.

Last year, the maximum power demand in Greater Hyderabad was 3,756 MW, which has now soared to 4,352 MW. Daily power consumption has recorded a 15 percent growth, increasing from 79 million units (MU) to 90 MU.

The upward trend in the daily electricity consumption is not limited to the city’s western corridor alone. Significant power usage increases have also been recorded in eastern neighborhoods like Koheda, Uppal Bhagayath, and Mansanpally, as well as in northern and southern areas such as Medchal, Dundigal, Kandukur, and Kachavani Singaram.

With the growing demand for electricity in urban areas, the state government has directed power utilities to enhance infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted supply. The authorities are considering measures such as upgrading 168 power transformers at substations, installing 3,100 new distribution transformers, and extending power lines—214 kilometers for 33 kV feeders and 434 kilometers for 11 kV feeders. Meanwhile, the state has allocated Rs. 2,000 crore to strengthen the power supply network, ensuring quality and reliability amid Hyderabad’s booming growth.
