In response to the concern, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) official handle replied: “Dear citizen, thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. The area engineer has been notified to inspect the site and take all necessary precautionary measures to ensure citizen safety. @SantoshnagarDC @EEC7_ghmc.”
Meanwhile, Santhosh @skv8801 shared his idea on X, saying, “Can you build an app that shows the location of all manholes present in Hyderabad? Pedestrians can avoid walking on those manholes. Very often, in the rainy season, manholes are left open. If an app is built, it would help citizens to avoid them, and it will also help your teams to clear the water logging.”
Additionally, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials have recently warned about opening manholes in the city’s roads and other areas. The Water Board is implementing preventive measures to avoid accidents. It is important to note that under the HMWSSB ACT – 1989, Section 74, it is an offense for any citizen or unauthorised person to open or remove manhole lids without permission from the authorities.
Violators may face criminal charges, fines, and potential imprisonment. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has said that strict action will be taken against those who engage in such activities.
Any issues with manhole covers, including damage or open lids, should be reported by calling the Water Board’s complaint number, 155313.
