Company trip turns fatal off Phu Quoc coast
A mobile phone company had taken its distributors and their families from India on a trip to Vietnam. A total of 250 people joined the tour, including 35 from Andhra Pradesh and 40 from Telangana.
As part of the trip, the tourists went on a sea excursion in three boats. At around 1 pm, one speedboat set out from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island. It was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members.
Nearby tourist boats launch immediate rescue operation
The speedboat capsized about 400 metres from the shore, throwing passengers into the water. Operators of nearby tourist boats rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.
Local authorities said rescue efforts were hampered because the boat had overturned completely. Rough seas also made it difficult to rescue the tourists.
Some passengers were rescued and taken to hospital. The source copy said others were missing and search operations were continuing. It suggested that changing weather conditions may have caused the boat to capsize.
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam responded to the accident and said rescue operations were under way. It also said a control room had been set up for those affected.
