Cyber thieves wipe out Rs. 1.04L from Hyderabad woman’s account after phone theft

Hyderabad: A 45-year-old private employee from Hyderabad lost ₹1,04,901 in a cyber fraud incident after her mobile phone was stolen during a bus journey.
According to the Hyderabad Cybercrime Police, the woman was traveling from Tarnaka to Kachiguda when she lost her phone. She filed a complaint at the Kachiguda Police Station within two days of the incident.
Shortly after the loss, unauthorised transactions began from her bank account. On reviewing her bank statement, she found that ₹1,04,901 had been debited from her State Bank of India (SBI) account without her consent. She has since submitted an online complaint seeking help.

Police have urged citizens to take immediate action if their phone is lost or stolen:
• Contact your mobile service provider and block the SIM card.
• Use remote tracking tools like “Find My Device” (Android) or “Find My iPhone” (iOS) to lock or erase the phone.
• Inform your bank and request a temporary block on online, UPI, and mobile banking services.
• Avoid storing banking passwords, ATM card numbers, CVV, or sensitive information in Notes apps.
• Secure financial apps with biometric locks or strong passwords.
• Regularly monitor bank statements and enable SMS or email alerts for all transactions.
• File an FIR or a lost mobile complaint at the nearest police station.
