Passport police verification delayed as Greater Hyderabad police reorganisation slows file processing

HYDERABAD: Police verification for passport applications is facing significant delays across Greater Hyderabad following the reorganisation of police commissionerates, changes in police station jurisdictions and the transfer of pending verification files.
The verification process, which was earlier completed within a week, is now taking more than a month in many cases. The delay has affected job seekers, students, tourists and business travellers, forcing many to postpone overseas travel plans.
Police station jurisdiction changes add to workload
The restructuring has resulted in the transfer of several police stations between commissionerates. Alwal, Shamirpet, Begumpet, Gopalapuram, Tukaramgate, Maredpally, Bollaram, Tirumalagiri and Karkhana police stations have been shifted from the Cyberabad Commissionerate to the Malkajgiri Commissionerate.
More than 300 pending passport verification applications were transferred to the Malkajgiri Commissionerate in early June, leading to a sudden increase in workload. Patancheru and Aminpur police stations have also been merged into the Cyberabad Commissionerate from Sangareddy district, further increasing the verification burden.
Similarly, Rajendranagar, Mailardevpally, Attapur, RGI Airport and Badangpet police station areas have been brought under the Hyderabad Commissionerate. Officials said verification takes longer in these areas because of large gated communities and a sizeable migrant population.
Growing demand, staff shortage worsen situation
The number of passport applications has continued to rise because of increasing demand for overseas education, employment, tourism and business travel. According to police department statistics, more than 8.67 lakh passport verification requests were processed across Telangana during 2025–26.
Last year, Hyderabad Commissionerate handled 2,27,889 passport verification requests, Cyberabad processed around 2,50,000, while Malkajgiri handled about 1,40,000.
Officials said the combination of rising applications, staff shortages and administrative restructuring has slowed the verification process. They advised applicants facing delays to contact their respective police station or the Regional Passport Office to check the status of their applications.
