OUTA seeks revocation of Professor Manohar suspension

HYDERABAD: The Osmania University Teachers Association (OUTA) has strongly condemned the suspension of its president, Professor Manohar, describing the action as unjust, undemocratic and deeply distressing.
Suspension termed attack on academic freedom
OUTA said Professor Manohar has consistently fought for the rights of university teachers and that suspending him amounts to stifling democratic voices and undermining academic freedom. The association said no authority has the right to curb teachers or their representatives from raising legitimate concerns.
Professor Manohar has served the teaching community for over two decades, including nearly 15 years as OUTA president and general secretary. During this period, he worked on key issues such as promotions, pay scales, recruitment and service conditions, the association said.
Role in raising retirement age highlighted
OUTA noted that Professor Manohar played a crucial role in increasing the retirement age of university teachers to 65 years, a decision that benefited the academic community across the state. The association said he earned the trust and respect of teachers through his selfless service, without seeking personal gain.
Holding the Osmania University administration fully responsible for the situation, OUTA demanded that the suspension be revoked immediately.
Emergency meetings announced
In response to the developments, OUTA held an emergency executive committee meeting on Monday. The association unanimously decided to convene a general body meeting of all members at 3 pm on January 20 to decide on the future course of action.
OUTA said the incident has triggered widespread debate, especially given Osmania University’s reputation as an institution known for democratic governance and progressive thought. The action against the teachers’ association president, it said, raises serious questions about democratic functioning and academic autonomy within the university.
Reiterating its stand, OUTA said it would not compromise on protecting teachers’ rights and dignity and affirmed its full support to Professor Manohar.
