Osmania University slips to 1,601-1,800 in THE ranking

HYDERABAD: Osmania University has slipped further in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, with the institution placed in the 1,601-1,800 band for 2027.
The university was placed in the 1,201-1,500 band last year. It had remained in the same band from 2023 to 2025, while it was placed in the 1,001-1,200 band in 2022.
From 2018 to 2021, Osmania University was ranked in the 801-1,000 band. The latest ranking marks a significant decline over the period.
Osmania University misses QS ranking for first time
The THE World University Rankings 2027 covered 2,297 institutions from 118 countries, including 143 institutions from India. Osmania University was placed only in the 1,601-1,800 band.
The university also failed to secure a place in the QS World University Rankings released in June. This means it was outside the top 1,500 institutions in that ranking. In the 2025 and 2026 QS rankings, Osmania University was placed in the 1,201-1,400 band.
The decline comes at a time when the state government has allocated ₹ 1,000 crore in the budget to develop Osmania University as a world-class university.
Some academics have expressed concern over the fall in rankings. They attributed the decline to a significant reduction in the number of faculty members and a fall in the quality of research.
University of Hyderabad improves its THE ranking
The University of Hyderabad, which was in the 1,001-1,200 band in the 2026 THE ranking, moved up to the 801-1,000 band this year.
International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad and SR University were also placed in the 801-1,000 band.
Vardhaman College of Engineering was placed in the 1,401-1,600 band, while Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad was in the 1,601-1,800 band.
