Ongole police visit RGV’s Hyderabad residence over defamation case involving AP leaders
Hyderabad: Police from Ongole arrived at the residence of film director Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) in Hyderabad on Monday, November 25, 2024, following a second notice issued for questioning in connection with a defamation case.
RGV, who was initially asked to appear on November 20, 2024, had requested an extension due to his film commitments. In response, Ongole Rural Circle Inspector (CI) Srikanth sent another notice through WhatsApp, instructing RGV to appear at the Ongole Rural police station on November 25.
However, despite the notice, RGV informed the police that he could not attend the questioning today. As a result, there are reports suggesting that the police may take the director into custody and shift him to Ongole for further interrogation.
The case against RGV originated after Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ramalingam filed a complaint accusing the director of defaming political leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Minister Nara Lokesh. The complaint alleges that RGV posted altered images of these leaders on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and made derogatory comments during the promotion of his film Vyuham.
The case, filed on November 12, 2024, is being investigated under Sections 336(4) and 353(2) of the BNS Act and Section 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act, which pertains to the dissemination of objectionable content online.
