Hyderabad: The construction of the northern section of the Regional Ring Road (RRR) in Hyderabad has made significant progress. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised the construction plans for the Telangana portion, which will stretch from toll plazas to Road Over Bridges (ROBs).

The project will feature two major “extended dumbbell” intersections at Girmapur, near Sangareddy, and at Choutuppal, located along the Vijayawada highway. These intersections facilitate traffic movement from the RRR to other routes, allowing vehicles to ascend, descend, and divert to various roads.

Substantial land will also be required for construction of the northern section of the RRR, which will begin at Girmapur and connect to the Hyderabad-Pune highway and the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway at Choutuppal.

The extended dumbbells will require 37.46 hectares of land near Choutuppal and 37.69 hectares near Sangareddy. Loop roads connecting these intersections will span approximately two kilometers.

The northern section of the RRR will consist of eight lanes, while land acquisition will be done for a four-lane configuration. A cloverleaf-shaped bridge will also be constructed between Gajwel and Pragnapur on the Hyderabad-Mancherial Road, similar to the loop road system at the dumbbell intersections.

In addition to these major interchanges, the project will include several other interchanges across the route. The northern section of the RRR, which covers a length of 161 km, will be developed in five packages. The construction will involve the crossing of several national and state highways and the creation of minor, major, and box culverts at various locations.

The project will also feature 11 toll plazas, 6 rest areas, 11 interchanges, and 187 underpasses of varying sizes. Other infrastructure includes road overbridges (ROBs), 27 major bridges, 80 minor bridges, and 404 box culverts.

According to the NHAI’s report, the total cost for the northern RRR section is estimated at Rs 7,104.06 crore. The work is expected to be completed within two years. After construction is completed, the contractors will be responsible for maintaining the road for the next five years.

The project is expected to generate approximately Rs 15,768 crore in toll revenue over the next 17 years. The northern section of the RRR will pass through Sangareddy, Narsapur, Tupran, Gajwel, Yadadri, Pragnapur, and Bhuvanagiri, and will ultimately connect to the southern section at Choutuppal.
