#JusticeForNorthHyderabad: Residents demand equal development in Hyderabad

Listen to Story

Hyderabad: Residents of North Hyderabad are raising concerns about the growing disparity in development between the northern and southern parts of the city. Many residents argue that North Hyderabad should no longer be treated as a “dumping yard” and deserve equal development opportunities. A hashtag, #JusticeForNorthHyderabad, has gone viral on social media platforms, drawing attention to these concerns.

Sampath Reddy Mamidi (@sampath6556) was one of the prominent voices calling attention to the issue on X (formerly known as Twitter). He highlighted the stark contrast in development between the two regions. “For South Hyderabad: Sports University; Skills University; Fourth City; Pharma City; Hitec City; Film City; AI City; Metro Expansion; Airport; Amazon, Google, Apple. For North Hyderabad: Jawaharnagar Trash Dumping Yard; Jeedimetla Polluting Industries. North Hyderabad is NOT a dumping yard! We too deserve equal development,” his post read.

Sampath further proposed a solution, calling for the establishment of a Fintech City in the northern part of the city on a 1,000-acre site, which could create one million jobs and bridge the development gap between North and South Hyderabad. He tagged several prominent political leaders in his post, including @revanth_anumula, @Eatala_Rajender, @kp_vivekanand, @MarriRajasekar, @chmallareddyMLA, and the @TelanganaCMO, urging them to invest in the northern region’s growth.

North Hyderabad Metro Demand Grows Stronger

In addition to calls for better infrastructure, residents have also been vocal about the lack of metro connectivity in the northern part of the city. Sampath Reddy Mamidi has been advocating for the inclusion of four additional metro corridors in the ongoing Hyderabad Metro Phase II Expansion project. These corridors are:
1. Paradise to Medchal
2. JBS Shamirpet
3. Tarnaka-ECIL-Keesara-Nagaram
4. Bowenpally-Gandimysamma

Sampath highlighted the need for metro connectivity in North Hyderabad, stating, “It’s time to end the disparity and bring Metro connectivity to North Hyderabad. Let’s make North Hyderabad a part of Hyderabad’s growth story.”

Other social media users have echoed similar concerns. HydReality (@HydReality) pointed out that the Metro extension had been removed from the initial plan for ECIL to Tarnaka, and they criticised the previous Member of Parliament, who is now the Chief Minister, for not prioritising metro lines to Medchal and ECIL.

Public Support for Development in North Hyderabad

Balaji Kanamakunta, another resident, expressed strong support for the cause, stating, “Yes, we strongly need and deserve growth and development in North Hyderabad. It’s high time for the authorities to act on this matter on priority.” Similarly, Reynolds Das Kuntam criticised the neglect of North Hyderabad, stating, “North Hyderabad is NOT a dumping ground. We demand what is due. @PMOIndia @revanth_anumula @HMDA_Gov @ghmc, take notice from the taxpayers of North Hyderabad.”

Over 30 Lakh Residents Demand Action

The call for development is particularly strong from the over 30 lakh residents of the northern regions, including Medchal and Shamirpet. The residents are urgently demanding that the state government include the North Corridor in the ongoing expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Phase II project. With the rapid urbanization and increasing population of North Hyderabad, the lack of metro connectivity has become a critical issue.
