Nizampet residents demand action to protect Amber Lake from pollution

Nizampet: Over 150 residents of Nizampet, near Pragathi Nagar’s Bathukamma Ghat, gathered on Sunday, February 2, 2025, to raise awareness about the pollution and degradation of Amber Lake. The rally, which carried the slogan “Save Nature, Save Our Future,” focused on the impact of dumping non-vegetarian waste into the lake.
Participants urged vendors and customers at the nearby non-vegetarian market to stop polluting the lake by offering roses. The rally also drew attention to the encroachments around the lake, which have contributed to traffic congestion. Residents called on the police to remove the encroachments and alleviate the growing problems in the area.
Children who participated in the rally gave roses to the KPHB Circle Inspector, urging action. “When we go outside with our parents, there is a terrible smell here, causing headaches and vomiting. Sir, please save our future,” they told the officer. The Circle Inspector responded, promising to provide assistance.

The protest focused on waste dumping into Amber Lake, including non-vegetarian remains and garbage. Participants distributed roses to vendors around the lake, urging them to protect the environment and avoid polluting the water. A petition was also signed, calling for action to address the environmental concerns surrounding the lake.
Sai Teja, a social activist, spoke with Hyderabad Mail about the ongoing issues around the lake. “Many commercial activities are happening near Amber Lake, particularly non-vegetarian shops. The waste food scraps and fecal waste is being dumped into the lake, especially after 9 p.m. Trucks bring in loads of waste, but no action is being taken because there are no CCTV cameras around the area,” he said.
Teja criticized the shop owners who encouraged customers to discard waste into the water, claiming they justified their actions by saying they were feeding the organisms in the lake. “They fail to recognize the pollution they are causing,” he added.
People of all ages participated in the rally, including children, senior citizens, and residents of Pragathi Nagar. Teja praised the young participants for their involvement and hoped their efforts would inspire others to protect the environment. He also called for stricter measures from local authorities, including fines for those polluting the lake.
