NIZAMABAD: Several village panchayats in Nizamabad district have banned the sale of ice cream from pushcarts, citing concerns over children’s health.

Panchayat bodies have passed resolutions prohibiting entry of ice cream carts into villages. Posters warn that vendors violating the order will face a fine of ₹5,000.

Panchayats enforce ban across multiple mandals

Villages including Suddapalli in Dichpally mandal, Mandapur in Makloor mandal, and Gadepalli, Annaram, Nuthpalli and Thondakur in Donkeshwar mandal have adopted similar resolutions.

Panchayats in Nandipet, Armoor, Mupkal and Velpur mandals have also unanimously banned roadside ice cream sales.

Boards announcing the ban have been installed at village entrances and major junctions.

Villagers cite health concerns for children

Residents said children consuming ice cream from pushcarts were falling ill with headaches, cough and cold. They also expressed concern over the use of artificial colours and chemicals, which they said could lead to serious illnesses, including cancer.

Gram sabhas were convened before passing the resolutions, with support from village development committees and youth groups.

Panuganti Roopa, sarpanch of Suddapalli, said, “We have banned ice cream pushcarts in the village from April 2 with the support of villagers. If anyone violates the decision, a fine of ₹5,000 will be imposed.”

Vinododdi, a resident of Suddapalli, said, “Children are falling sick after consuming these products. Considering the health risks, the gram sabha decided to stop such sales.”
