Rescued Huskies And Dogs From Patancheru Outskirts In Poor Health Condition

HYDERABAD: Police and animal welfare groups have rescued three more dogs from the Shankarpally–Patancheru stretch on the city’s outskirts, taking the total number of animals saved to nine. One dog was found dead on the first day of the search operation.

Rescuers said the dogs were in poor health. “These dogs were in extremely poor condition. They were dehydrated and feeble due to severe heat stress over the past 15 days,” said Harsh Kishor B of SWAN NGO, which is conducting the rescue along with AASRA Foundation.

He added that the rescued animals are being housed at a shelter and will undergo blood tests and treatment shortly.

German Shepherd rescue raises suspicion of wider abandonment

Activists said the rescue of a German Shepherd indicates that more pedigree dogs may have been abandoned in the area. “We have leads about two more dogs, and the police are assisting with the search. We are also checking if other rare breeds were abandoned,” Harsh said.

The case came to light on April 29 after residents of Nandigaon village alerted activists about a pack of dogs moving through scrubland. Locals alleged that 35 to 40 animals were offloaded from a truck that entered the area on the night of April 20.

When rescuers reached the spot, they found five Huskies in a deplorable state. One had died due to heatstroke. Activists claimed some dogs were taken away by people living nearby.

Man detained for selling Husky puppies at event

Meanwhile, activists flagged illegal breeding after catching a man selling three 33-day-old Husky puppies at a pet adoption drive at Necklace Road on Sunday. He was handed over to Lake police station.

Circle inspector B Chitti said, “During interrogation, the man admitted he was engaged in illegal breeding. However, we did not find any direct connection between the puppies and the Patancheru abandonment case.”

Police said he was let off with a warning as it was a first offence. “We will keep a close watch on him,” the officer added.

Activists said the puppies were returned to the man as they still require their mother’s milk. “We have asked him to sterilise the mother immediately and put the puppies up for adoption in a few weeks,” said Gowri Vandana of AASRA Foundation. The matter has also been reported to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s veterinary wing.
