NIMS completes 1,000 robotic surgeries in under three years
HYDERABAD: Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has completed 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries in less than three years, with more than 90% of the procedures provided free under government-supported healthcare schemes, the institute said.
The procedures were performed by the departments of Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology and Surgical Oncology. NIMS said robotic surgery had helped improve surgical precision and reduce postoperative pain, blood loss and hospital stay, besides aiding faster recovery.

Urology accounts for 590 of 1,000 procedures
The Urology department accounted for 590 surgeries, the largest share of the total. Patients ranged in age from one year to over 80 years.
The procedures included radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. The department also performed robotic renal transplants, uro-gynaecological and uro-reconstructive procedures, including Boari flap, ureteric reimplantation and pyeloplasty. Paediatric pyeloplasty and other reconstructive surgeries were also among the procedures.
Surgical Gastroenterology performed 248 procedures involving hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, intestinal and upper gastrointestinal conditions.
Surgical Oncology accounted for another 162 procedures. These included surgeries for ovarian, uterine and colorectal cancers, with organ-preservation and nerve-sparing techniques used where appropriate, according to the institute.
Over 90% surgeries provided free under schemes
More than 90% of the 1,000 procedures were performed free under government-supported healthcare schemes, including Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), NIMS said.
The institute said the initiative was aimed at making robotic surgery accessible to patients who would otherwise find the treatment unaffordable.
NIMS had earlier reported completing 300 robotic-assisted surgeries within a year of installing the da Vinci robotic system. In July 2025, the institute said its Urology department alone had completed more than 350 robotic surgeries in less than two years.
Director credits multidisciplinary teams for milestone
NIMS Director Rahul Devraj, senior professor of Urology and Renal Transplantation and robotic surgery coordinator, congratulated teams from Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, Anaesthesiology, Nursing Services, operation theatres and supporting departments.
Devraj said the milestone reflected the expertise and efforts of multidisciplinary teams and strengthened NIMS’ position in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery.
Devraj’s designation as NIMS Director is independently supported by a June 2026 government appointment reported by multiple news organisations. He was appointed for a three-year term and had earlier headed the institute’s Urology department.
He thanked Telangana Health, Medical and Family Welfare Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha for his guidance and support in strengthening advanced healthcare services at the institute.

Devraj also thanked Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for supporting upgrades to healthcare infrastructure that, he said, helped NIMS reach the milestone.
NIMS said it would continue expanding robotic-assisted surgery and other advanced, minimally invasive treatment services.
