Construction work underway at NIMS Hyderabad expansion project

HYDERABAD: Expansion of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is progressing at a brisk pace and is expected to be completed by the end of this year, NIMS director N Bheerappa said.

The project will add 2,000 beds to the existing 1,639-bed hospital, taking the total bed strength to 3,639. The expansion is aimed at introducing new subspecialities, advanced operation theatres, and upgraded diagnostic and emergency facilities.

The hospital expansion, spread across 19.54 acres with a built-up area of over 26 lakh square feet, is being executed at a cost of ₹11,698 crore. Megha Engineering Infrastructure Limited is implementing the project.

Four blocks, 13 floors each

The expanded campus will comprise four integrated blocks. Block A will house outpatient services, while Blocks B and C will accommodate inpatient departments. Block D will be dedicated to emergency care. All four blocks will have 13 floors, forming an integrated super-speciality healthcare complex.

Bheerappa said civil works on the main hospital complex were under way. “Eight floors of the main building have already been completed and work is continuing on the remaining five floors,” he said.

He added that construction of the emergency block began later as a government school earlier located on that portion of the campus had to be relocated. “Only two floors of the emergency block have been completed so far,” he said.

Focus on paediatric subspecialities

The expanded facility will include 38 state-of-the-art operation theatres, including hybrid catheterisation laboratories. The modular theatres will be fully air-conditioned and equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air filtration systems to ensure near zero-bacteria environments, suitable for specialised surgical procedures.

NIMS also plans to introduce around eight new subspecialities, with a strong focus on paediatric care. These include paediatric nephrology, paediatric rheumatology, paediatric immunodeficiency, paediatric cardiology and paediatric oncology.

“Many of these subspecialities are currently limited in the public healthcare sector, and their addition will significantly strengthen specialised care for children,” Bheerappa said.

On the diagnostics and research front, the facility will house three CT scanners, two MRI machines, hybrid cath labs, CT-MRI facilities and an advanced digital laboratory. The total value of new medical equipment is estimated at around ₹1,100 crore.
