NHRC orders inquiry into alleged police lathi charge at Sandhya theatre

Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) directed the Hyderabad Police Commissioner to investigate Revathi’s death and injury to her son at Sandhya Theatre on December 4, 2024, due to the alleged lathi charge. The NHRC issued the directions to Hyderabad city police commissioner based on a complaint from a city-based advocate on Thursday.
The incident occurred around 9:30 PM on December 4, 2024, when crowds surged during Allu Arjun’s “Pushpa 2” promotional event at Sandhya Theatre, RTC Cross Roads.
According to the complaint, Rama Rao Immaneni, due to the alleged lathi charge by the Chikkadpally Police accompanying Allu Arjun, caused a stampede leading to death of Revathi and injury to her child. The complainant has requested intervention of the Commission to take necessary action on erring police officials who have resorted to the lathi charge.
NHRC noted that the posts of Chairperson and Members of the Telangana State Human Rights Commission are lying vacant in the SHRC. Hence, there is no possibility of taking cognizance by the Commission in the matter.
Subsequently, the NHRC directed the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, to have a senior officer inquire into the allegations, ensure the needful action and submit the detailed action report to the Commission within four weeks.
It is to be noted that following a complaint by Revathi’s husband, Chikkadpally Police registered a case against Allu Arjun, his security team, and theatre management under sections 105, 118(1) read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Act.
When the film actor approached the Telangana High Court, Justice Juvvadi Sridevi of the Telangana High Court granted interim bail to Allu Arjun on a personal bond of Rs. 50,000. He was out on bail and further investigation is underway.
