NH-44 flyover delay causes daily gridlock near Hyderabad

NH-44 traffic congestion between Secunderabad and Medchal due to incomplete flyover works

HYDERABAD: Thousands of commuters are facing daily hardship on National Highway-44 between Secunderabad and Medchal due to incomplete and delayed flyover and road-widening works, residents’ associations have said.

The stretch is a key arterial corridor for office-goers, students, goods vehicles and long-distance travellers entering and exiting Hyderabad towards Nagpur and beyond. The normal travel time of about one hour has stretched to nearly two hours or more during peak hours because of damaged road surfaces, barricading, diversions and unfinished structures.

At several locations, the carriageway is in poor condition, marked by potholes, uneven surfaces and sudden lane drops. Commuters said these conditions are leading to frequent traffic jams, accidents and vehicle breakdowns.

Large sections on both sides of the highway remain dug up for flyover construction. However, residents allege that there has been little visible progress on piers, decks or service roads for several months, creating a perception that the contractor has effectively abandoned the work.

The Secunderabad–Medchal stretch of NH-44 is one of the busiest highway corridors in the region and any prolonged disruption has a cascading impact on daily mobility and logistics, residents said.

They have urged the authorities to take immediate corrective steps and restore the stretch to a safe and fully motorable condition at the earliest.
