MAHBUBNAGAR: A major mishap was averted on National Highway-44 near Jadcherla in Mahbubnagar district when a private sleeper bus crashed into a tanker carrying hydrofluoric acid, causing dense chemical fumes to spread across the stretch on Thursday.

Passengers escape through emergency exit
Police said the collision occurred when the bus, travelling towards Bengaluru, rammed into the rear of the acid tanker. The impact led to leakage of the chemical, prompting passengers to evacuate through the emergency exit. All passengers exited safely, officials added.

Fire crews drain hazardous chemical
Fire and Disaster Response personnel reached the spot and began draining the hydrofluoric acid to prevent further risk. The area was cordoned off and traffic on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru section of NH-44 was diverted for safety.

Officials said specialised teams were deployed to neutralise fumes and ensure the tanker was fully secured before towing.

Probe underway
Police have initiated an inquiry into the cause of the accident. The condition of the tanker driver and bus crew was not immediately known.
