Waste Ramky

HYDERABAD: Penalties against Ramky continue to mount as the company faces action from both the National Green Tribunal and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for lapses in waste handling.

The NGT, in its 28 September order, barred the company from moving fresh garbage to the Jawahar Nagar dumping yard and from using refuse-derived fuel meant for waste-to-energy operations. The tribunal noted that nearly 15 lakh tonnes of waste had already accumulated at the site and warned that adding new loads would worsen the situation.

During a follow up hearing on 10 October, the tribunal found that fresh waste was being transported to the yard in violation of its order and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh. It cautioned that stricter measures would follow if violations recur.

GHMC fines Ramky for sanitation lapses

The GHMC is also taking action against Ramky for failing to meet contractual obligations. Officials said the company’s lapses were affecting sanitation across the city.

On 22 September, the Khairatabad zonal commissioner levied a fine of ₹1 lakh after garbage was found uncollected on streets in Karwan and Jubilee Hills circles. Last month, the GHMC issued two more notices for failing to clear garbage at vulnerable points on time and for not removing waste from roads.

Contract terms and citywide impact

In 2009, the GHMC signed a 25-year agreement with Ramky to lift waste from all households and garbage-vulnerable points, and to transport it to the designated dumping yard by 9.30am daily. The contract mandates that no waste should remain visible in public areas after that time.

Most household waste is now collected by Swachh autos and moved to transfer stations, leaving Ramky responsible primarily for secondary transport. Despite this, officials say the company continues to neglect lifting duties.

The GHMC pays Ramky ₹2,750 per metric tonne for transport. Hyderabad generates nearly 7,500 tonnes of waste every day.

GHMC commissioner R V Karnan has earlier warned that the corporation will not hesitate to cancel the agency’s contract if duties continue to be neglected.
