Animals At Nehru Zoological Park Under Cooling And Shaded Enclosures During Summer

HYDERABAD: As temperatures soar, the Nehru Zoological Park has launched a comprehensive summer plan combining traditional and modern cooling methods to protect its animals.

The zoo has installed air coolers in carnivore enclosures and the monkey area. Vetiver curtains and thunga grass coverings, watered regularly, reduce heat. In the nocturnal animal house, air conditioners and exhaust fans now ensure a cooler environment.

Additionally, water sprinklers and small rain guns operate in all enclosures, while foggers cool the reptile house, macaw enclosures, and pheasantry and aviary areas. The zoo shades birds’ cages with thunga grass and covers the duck and stork ponds with shade nets.

Herbivores enjoy shady shelters, and all animal houses feature Kashkash thattis topped with thunga grass.

The zoo has also adjusted animal diets to combat heat. Animals now receive frozen treats, citrus fruits, watermelon, glucose, and electrolyte water. Vitamin C, B-Complex supplements, and thermo care liquid are added to meals to maintain hydration and health.

“We have made elaborate arrangements to keep all animals cool and hydrated. Thattis and thunga grass are watered three to four times daily. Our veterinary team monitors every species closely to prevent summer stress,” said J Vasantha, Curator, Nehru Zoological Park.

Currently, the zoo houses 196 species with over 2,100 animals. To enhance visitor comfort, the zoo has also installed palm leaf sheds and drinking water facilities at high-traffic areas.
