White Tiger Glass Enclosure & Tunnel Aquarium Coming Soon At Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoo

Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad is set to open a new glass enclosure for white tigers, with similar enclosures planned for lions and other big cats soon. This development is part of a broader initiative to upgrade the zoo and enhance the visitor experience.

According to the news reports, several new attractions are in the pipeline, including a Tunnel Aquarium, a walk-through Aviary, and a 9D Virtual Digital Experience Center. These additions are expected to boost the zoo’s daily footfall from the current average of 30,000 to an estimated 50,000 once completed.

The glass enclosures are inspired by the facility at Vantara Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, which currently houses the only such enclosure in India.

As per the reports, the Tunnel Aquarium will be built over one acre of land within the zoo and will showcase a variety of marine species. It will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, similar to aquariums in Ahmedabad and Chennai.

An aviary is also being planned, where visitors will be able to walk among and feed birds from India and abroad. This too will follow the PPP model.

In addition, a 9D simulator, similar to the one at the Botanical Gardens, will offer a 360-degree digital experience of wildlife. A separate 3D Virtual Center focused on environmental awareness is also being developed.

With the city expanding rapidly, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has reportedly highlighted that one zoo is not sufficient for Hyderabad. It was learnt that the government has allocated 200 acres at Mucherla for the development of a new zoological park. The existing Nehru Zoo will also be integrated with the beautification of the nearby Mir Alam Tank.

Dr. Sunil S. Hiremath, Director of Telangana State Zoos, stated that the White Tiger Glass Enclosure is being constructed at a cost of ₹1.5 crore, and several projects under the PPP model are underway to upgrade the zoo to international standards.
