Goldsmith crafting traditional gold ornament in Narayanpet Saraf Bazaar

MAHABUBNAGAR: Narayanpet, known for its handloom sarees, is also emerging as a major hub for gold jewellery. The town’s Saraf Bazaar has earned national recognition for manufacturing and trading ornaments.

Traders estimate that annual transactions in the market are worth about ₹1,000 crore. The jewellery is now set to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

150-year-old bullion trade legacy

The Narayanpet Bullion Merchant Association traces its history to nearly 150 years. Buyers from Karnataka and Maharashtra visit the town to purchase gold ornaments.

Like the town’s weavers who draw fine threads for sarees, local goldsmiths craft delicate strands from 24-carat gold to create ornaments. Women artisans are skilled in weaving traditional ‘gopu jada’ chains.

Handmade ornaments draw inter-state buyers

Ornaments such as vankis, bangles (patlis), chiluka patlis, nans, Lambada nath (nose rings), tussi and mattilu are made entirely by hand.

Saraf Bazaar has 150 traders, 200 local goldsmiths and 70 Bengali artisans working in the sector.

Saketh Bhattad, chief coordinator of the Narayanpet Bullion Merchant Association, said the GI tag would give Narayanpet global recognition.
