Nampally station redevelopment to feature 200-metre skywalk linking Metro

HYDERABAD: A 200-metre skywalk connecting the Nampally railway station with the nearby Metro station on the main road will be the most prominent feature of the ₹327.27-crore redevelopment project underway at the station.
The skywalk will include escalators and travelators to ensure seamless movement and easier interchange for passengers between the railway and Metro systems.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy disclosed this during a media interaction after inspecting the redevelopment works on Thursday. South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava and other railway officials accompanied him.
Station modernisation to ease passenger movement
Kishan Reddy said the station handles around 60 trains daily and sees a footfall of nearly 28,000 passengers. The redevelopment project will add 16 lifts and eight escalators connecting the platforms with the air concourse to improve passenger movement.
The new design will also introduce separate pathways for arriving and departing passengers to reduce congestion inside the station.
Authorities are developing about 6,500 sq ft of space for eateries, kiosks, toilets and other passenger amenities. The plan also includes basement parking facilities.
Major railway infrastructure expansion in Telangana
Kishan Reddy said the government has taken up modernisation works at other major railway terminals in the city, including Secunderabad and Kacheguda. Railways have already established a new terminal at Cherlapalli.
He added that the railway budgetary allocation for Telangana has increased to more than ₹25,454 crore this year.
Over the past decade, South Central Railway has achieved nearly 100% electrification across its network, except for one upcoming new line. During this period, the zone constructed 346 km of new railway lines and upgraded 513 km of existing tracks while redeveloping more than 40 stations in Telangana.
Kazipet manufacturing unit nearing completion
The ₹521.36-crore Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit will likely be ready for commissioning within three months, the minister said. Railway projects worth ₹47,984 crore are currently under implementation in the state.
Railways have already deployed the indigenous Automatic Train Protection system Kavach 3.2 over 639 km covering 63 stations. Officials are now upgrading these sections to Kavach 4.0 while installing the system across an additional 384 route km.
