HYDRAA to complete Nalla Cheruvu makeover by month end

HYDERABAD: The Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally is undergoing rapid transformation, similar to Ambarpet’s Bathukamma Kunta. Development and beautification works are progressing swiftly, with the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) aiming to complete them by the end of this month.
Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected the site on Sunday and reviewed the progress. He issued several key instructions, including ensuring that the walking track around the lake remains unobstructed. He also directed officials to install CCTV cameras to enhance security.
Ranganath suggested setting up a maximum of two play areas for children and planting medicinal plants around the lake instead of regular ones to promote public health.
HYDRAA invites public to see the transformation
HYDRAA has invited citizens to visit the Nalla Cheruvu to witness its dramatic change. Once reduced to 16 acres due to encroachments and filled with construction debris, the lake has now expanded to 30 acres in just six months.
After desilting and removing debris, the lake’s depth has increased by about four metres. With recent rains, it now resembles a full water body. The area, once a dumping ground, has become a weekend recreation spot attracting morning and evening visitors.
Sixteen commercial sheds within the Full Tank Level (FTL) zone have been removed. Measures have been taken to prevent sewage inflow. A special platform is being built for Bathukamma celebrations, along with a small pond for immersing floral offerings.
Residents said HYDRAA’s efforts have completely changed the lake’s image. “Encroachments were cleared, the stench has gone, and the area is now peaceful,” said locals. The lake, they added, has become a valuable gift from HYDRAA to Kukatpally and neighbouring residents.
