Nalgonda couple sells newborn girl for ₹3 lakh; ICDS, police probe child trafficking

TELANGANA: In a shocking incident, a couple from Nalgonda district allegedly sold their newborn daughter for ₹3 lakh to a couple from Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, police said.

According to police and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) officials, Korra Babu of Ellapuram Thanda in Nalgonda district and his wife Parvathi, a native of Urabayitanda in Peddavoora mandal, decided to sell their newborn citing financial difficulties.

The couple, who work as daily labourers in Nalgonda, already have two daughters aged six and seven. Their first child, a son, had died shortly after birth. On October 10, Parvathi delivered a baby girl at a private hospital in Haliya.

Elder daughter’s desperate plea

When the couple began discussions through intermediaries to sell the infant to a childless couple from Eluru, their elder daughter Nakshatra learnt about it. She reportedly pleaded with her parents not to sell her baby sister and even informed her grandmother about their plan.

A video of Nakshatra crying and begging her mother, “Amma, please don’t sell my sister,” went viral on social media. Despite her emotional pleas, the couple went ahead with their decision.

Sale finalised near temple

Police said that on October 23, Parvathi, along with her newborn, went to her parental home in Urabayitanda. The next morning, she reportedly handed over the baby to the buyers near Sammakka–Sarakka temple close to Nagarjunasagar after receiving the payment.

The incident came to light after Babu’s mother informed her elder son Suresh, who later approached the authorities. Based on his complaint, Nalgonda police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Assistant CDPO Suvarna and ICDS staff visited the village and began inquiries into the child sale. Police said Babu has gone absconding.

Locals also alleged that the couple had sold another daughter born during Parvathi’s third delivery in a similar manner earlier.
