HYDERABAD: A 35-year-old woman died after jumping into a water pit to save her daughter who was learning to swim in Nagarkurnool district on Thursday. The incident left her two children without a parent.

Child struggles while learning swimming in village pit

According to villagers, Anusha, a resident of Veltur in Uppununthala mandal, took her daughters Dhanalakshmi, 12, and Akshita, 10, to a nearby water pit to teach them swimming.

She tied empty soft drink bottles around Akshita’s waist and asked her to enter the water.

Mother jumps in panic, fails to swim

As Akshita began swimming, she started crying, prompting Anusha to fear that the child might drown. She immediately jumped into the water.

Dhanalakshmi, who was on the bank, alerted nearby farmers. They rescued Akshita, but Anusha, who did not know swimming, drowned.

Family struggles after earlier loss of father

Anusha’s husband, Mallaiah, died five years ago. Since then, she had been working as a daily wage labourer and raising her daughters while sending them to a private school.
