Nagaram-Dammaiguda road in ruins, residents demand immediate repairs
HYDERABAD: A major arterial road connecting Nagaram, Dammaiguda, Jawahar Nagar, and Alwal has remained in dangerous, unrepaired condition for over three years. Potholes have caused injuries to commuters and damaged vehicles. Meanwhile, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation(MMC) and the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) continue to point fingers at each other over who is responsible for fixing it.
Suresh Kumar Akkala, a Social activist, has repeatedly raised the issue with MMC, HRDCL, the District Collector, and the Municipal Department. None of them have taken action. Suresh Kumar told HyderabadMail, “I have repeatedly reported this to MMC, HRDCL, the Collector, and the Municipal Department. No one has responded. They have not even done basic repairs, such as laying bitumen. Nothing at all.”
With an estimated four to five lakh vehicles passing through, the road is one of the key connectors in the area, linking Nagaram and Rampally to Dammaiguda, Jawahar Nagar, and Alwal. Reportedly, three years ago, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) designated the road for a 100-foot widening project and awarded a contract.
According to Suresh Kumar, since then, the contractor has not executed any meaningful work. Recently, workers arrived and cut down trees along the stretch, apparently to clear the way for widening, but left immediately after. The trees were destroyed, depriving the area of shade through the summer. The road was left in worse condition, with potholes forming across the surface. Suresh Kumar said, “They came, cut down all the trees, and left in a rush. We were left without shade during the summer. And then nothing, no road work, no repairs, nothing.”
A separate legal dispute has also slowed the project. Some residents went to court, asking for an 80-foot road instead of the planned 100-foot widening. This disagreement has caused more delays. In contrast, expansion work continued on the Rampally Nagaram to Rampally Ghatkesar road, even though it also faced court cases.
When residents approached MMC about the deteriorating road, the corporation responded that the project falls under the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) and is therefore outside MMC’s jurisdiction. MMC confirmed this and forwarded the complaint to HRDCL for action. However, forwarding complaints has not led to any repairs. The road remains neglected. Residents say neither agency has shared a timeline for when work will start.

Suresh Kumar has now filed the complaint online with MMC, tagging the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC), Ghatkesar Municipality, Keesara Deputy Collector (DC), and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). He also discussed the issue in person with Uppal Zonal Commissioner Radhika Gupta.
Residents are already feeling the consequences. School children have fallen on the rough, potholed road. Vehicles have sustained serious damage. Four to five lakh vehicles use this highway-volume road, and residents warn that a major accident is likely if repairs do not happen soon. Suresh Kumar said, “Many people are facing difficulties. School children are falling. Just the other day, a vehicle suffered significant damage. We need urgent repairs and action before a major tragedy happens.”
Looking for solutions, residents are now planning to stage a protest at the site in the coming days, holding placards to draw attention to the issue. Meanwhile, Suresh Kumar also pointed out what he called a fundamental contradiction in the government’s approach to road tax collection and usage.
He said, “People pay road tax when they buy a vehicle so the government will maintain the roads. If someone buys a car worth 30 lakhs, they pay 2 to 3 lakhs in road tax. Yet the roads look like this. Work has been left unfinished for three years.”
He also noted that politicians such as Malkajgiri MP Etela Rajender, BRS MLA Ch. Malla Reddy, and Congress leader Vajresh Yadav regularly use this stretch. Yet, none have intervened to push for repairs.
