Residents of Musi riverbed are furious as gates of Osman Sagar & Himayat Sagar lifted

Hyderabad: Residents of Musi River catchment area were left confused and angry following the sudden release of water from Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs Osman Sagar (Gandipet) and Himayat Sagar on Tuesday.
The authorities opened the gates of these reservoirs as the inflow from the upstream areas is still continuing and they released surplus water downstream. This has resulted in a huge increase of water flowing into the Musi river. The officials have advised the residents of the riverbed area to remain cautious as more water could be released to maintain the huge inflows.
The people residing in the riverbed areas have been spending sleepless nights due to the demolition drive being carried out as part of the Musi Riverfront Development Project. Several families have been left shelterless after their ‘illegal’ structures were demolished by the officials despite strong protests from the affected people.
Hyderabad city has not witnessed any major rainfall in the last few days and the release of significant volume of water into the river is being seen as a ploy by the Revanth Reddy government to force people to vacate their homes on their own.
