Hyderabad: As HYDRAA and revenue officials speed up the works on clearing encroachments on Musi River catchment area, residents of Langar Houz, fearing demolition of their houses, took out a huge protest rally against the Congress government’s ambitious plan to rejuvenate and beautify Musi riverfront.
Several teams of officials were seen visiting residential areas in the Musi river catchment area to identify and mark the structures built on the riverbed in Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts for the second day on Friday.

However, in parts of Kothapeta and Chaitanyapuri, the visiting officials faced obstructions from the residents. They prevented the officials from surveying the encroached area and marking their houses with ‘RB-X’ with red paint on the walls. An official said, RB stands for river bed while X indicates the marking of the house.
A large number of women also participated in the peaceful protest rally. They were seen raising slogans against the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the ruling Congress party.
During the survey on Thursday, the officials completed the marking of over 1,000 structures for demolition and they are expected to identify and mark the remaining 1,166 more today.
Out of the 2,166 structures built on the riverbed, 1,599 are in Hyderabad while 239 structures in Medchal-Malkajgiri district and 323 structures in Ranga Reddy district.
The Congress government has promised to allot 2BHK dignity houses to the affected residents due to demolition of encroachments in Musi riverbed. As part of the verification process of potential affected residents, the officials collected details such as Aadhaar card number, age, caste etc from them.
As part of the Musi River Front Development project, the Telangana government will develop a 55-km stretch with amusement parks, children’s watersports and business arenas along the river. The Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had said the government will form a tourism circuit by connecting all the historical structures in the vicinity of the Musi River such as Charminar, Qutub Shahi Tombs and Golconda.
