Musi Riverfront land allocation order by Telangana government, Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has prepared a proposal to build a 120-ft-wide road along the Musi river, stretching from the Amberpet Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to the Nagole Metro station, as part of a model corridor development. The proposal, estimated at ₹160 crore, will be placed before the GHMC standing committee on January 31.

As the first phase, a 27-km stretch from the Amberpet STP to the D-Mart area in Uppal Bhagayath has been proposed. Officials said the road will have footpaths on both sides and a central median with drains to facilitate floodwater flow. The roadworks are estimated at about ₹100 crore.

The project wing of GHMC is examining the proposal, which also includes construction of a bridge at the nala near Ramanthapur KC Nagar. At present, the road width along the stretch varies between 3 ft and 40 ft at some points, and up to 80 ft at others. As per the master plan, a 180-ft-wide corridor has been envisaged, for which land along the Musi bank and limited property acquisition may be required, officials said.

Focus on Musi river rejuvenation

The state government has reiterated its focus on restoring the Musi to its former glory and developing the riverfront. Chief minister Revanth Reddy, along with ministers and senior officials, recently visited Seoul in South Korea to study riverfront development models. Separately, GHMC officials and corporators visited the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad.

The government plans to anchor Hyderabad’s future urban development around the Musi. A detailed project report (DPR) for Musi development is being prepared, the chief minister informed the Assembly earlier.

Alternative to Hyderabad–Warangal highway

The Musi road proposal has existed for several years but did not progress under previous administrations. Once completed, the corridor is expected to provide an alternative route to the Hyderabad–Warangal National Highway (NH-163), easing traffic congestion.

Residents of Golnaka, Amberpet and Ramanthapur are likely to get smoother access towards Nagole Metro station, Warangal, Yadadri, Bhongir and Secunderabad. Areas such as Dilsukhnagar, Malakpet and Musarambagh may also benefit.

A 3-km stretch of 120-ft road already exists along the Musi at Uppal Bhagayath. By extending and linking this section via Peerzadiguda and Kachivani Singaram, the corridor is expected to function as a full-fledged alternative route, officials said, adding that the project could also help curb future encroachments along the river.
