HYDERABAD: Police on Wednesday arrested Dukka Uma Shankar for allegedly murdering 18-year-old Pavithra at Bapuji Nagar, Musheerabad, on December 8. He was produced before a magistrate for judicial custody.

The complaint was filed by Pavithra’s mother, Jadaga Lakshmi, a daily-wage worker living in Bapuji Nagar. The family had migrated from Srikakulam district and has two daughters, Pavithra and Revathi.

Family returned from Vijayawada a day before the killing

Lakshmi told police that Uma Shankar, a distant relative, had proposed marriage to Pavithra a year ago and the family had agreed to discuss it with elders.

On December 6, the family travelled to Vijayawada to fulfil a religious vow and returned home around 10pm on December 7.

At about 12.15pm on December 8, Uma Shankar allegedly arrived without notice and questioned why Pavithra was taken to Vijayawada without informing him. Pavithra reportedly told him that she disliked his behaviour and that he often called her in an intoxicated condition.

During the argument, Lakshmi stepped away to drink water. Police said Uma Shankar then pulled out a knife he had brought with him and stabbed Pavithra in the throat. He left his phone and the knife at the scene and fled. Pavithra died on the spot around 1.30pm due to heavy bleeding.

Accused traced near Skandagiri Temple

Investigators analysed CCTV footage from December 8 onwards and identified the suspect’s movements. On December 10, the team noticed Uma Shankar walking towards Skandagiri Temple in Chilkalguda.

He was located at his brother’s house around 10.10am and taken into custody. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to stabbing Pavithra because she rejected him.

Police conducted a confessional-cum-seizure panchanama in the presence of panch witnesses. They seized ₹1,10,000, a Realme smartphone, and a wallet containing the deceased’s SBI RuPay card, Aadhaar card, PAN card and Central Bank RuPay card.
