Motor Free Tap Drive 64 Illegal Water Motors Seized, 84 Fined In Hyderabad

Hyderabad: On the first day of the “Motor Free Tap” drive, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board seized 64 illegal motors and fined 84 individuals for illegal motor usage, leading to water wastage. The highest number of seizures occurred in the O&M Division, with 25 motors confiscated in the SR Nagar area.

The initiative, launched by the Water Board, aims to curb the use of motors and prevent water wastage, particularly in areas with low water pressure, where motor usage is prevalent. MD Ashok Reddy, accompanied by vigilance teams and local authorities, took part in the drive, personally overseeing motor seizures in several locations.

During a water supply check in Kakatiya Hills, Madhapur, MD Ashok Reddy highlighted the significant costs involved in supplying purified water to the city. He explained that water is pumped from over 150 kilometers away using large pipelines, and purifying 1,000 liters costs about ₹50. The MD urged residents not to use treated water for non-essential purposes like gardening, washing floors, or vehicles.

Ashok Reddy also highlighted the depletion of groundwater levels and the increasing demand for water tankers in some areas. He stressed the need to conserve drinking water, especially given the rising pressure on the water supply system. The use of motors to pump water causes pressure issues, affecting other consumers.

The Water Board will continue the drive across all divisions, with field-level staff, officials, and the ED Director participating in efforts to seize illegal motors and reduce water wastage. The vigilance team has already identified and seized motors installed by customers to pump water directly from the Water Board pipelines.

Illegal installation of motors in pipelines is a legal offense. The Water Board will seize any motors found to be illegally installed and impose fines. Repeat offenders may face legal action. Customers experiencing low water pressure or other issues are advised to contact the relevant manager, DGM, GM, or call the Water Board’s customer care at 155313.
