Mother among four held for selling two-month-old son in Nizamabad

NIZAMABAD: Fourth Town police have arrested four persons, including the mother, for allegedly selling a two-month-old boy to a childless man from Pune for ₹2.4 lakh, using a Hyderabad-based matrimonial service firm as a cover.
Police said poverty and addiction to liquor drove the woman to sell her infant. Apart from the child’s mother, two women linked to the marriage bureau and the buyer were arrested. One more accused is absconding.
Case began as missing persons complaint
The case came to light on December 5, when B Srinivas, a resident of the Yallamma Gutta area in Nizamabad, lodged a complaint stating that his wife and their two-month-old son were missing. Police registered a case and began an investigation.
On December 10, Srinivas’s wife, B Laxmi, appeared before the police but gave evasive answers. “Her responses raised suspicion,” Fourth Town Station House Officer B Satheesh Kumar said. Police also noted the family’s financial distress and Laxmi’s addiction to liquor.
Sale routed through marriage bureau
Subsequent questioning of Ramadevi and Manjula, associated with a Hyderabad-based marriage bureau, led to a breakthrough. Investigation revealed that Laxmi had allegedly sold her son to Vishal, a private sector employee from Pune who has no children.
Police said the transaction was facilitated by Vittal, Manjula and Ramadevi, in violation of adoption norms. Laxmi, Manjula, Ramadevi and Vishal were arrested and produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
The infant was handed back to his mother, the natural guardian, as he is less than five years old. Police said efforts are on to trace Vittal, who is on the run.
