Udupi Upahar restaurant in Moosapet sealed during Cyberabad food safety inspection over hygiene violations.

HYDERABAD: Cyberabad CMC Food Safety officials sealed Udupi Upahar in Moosapet after finding cockroach infestation, stale food and multiple hygiene violations during a surprise inspection on May 26.

Officials said the restaurant was operating with an expired food licence. The premises were closed as part of an ongoing food safety monitoring drive across the Cyberabad commissionerate limits.

Stale food, storage lapses found during inspection

Food safety officers found stale vegetable biryani and Manchurian items stored at the restaurant. The items were discarded immediately during the inspection.

Officials also found cooked vegetable biryani, cooked rice, batter, paneer, dough and other food items stored improperly in freezers. The inspection team raised concerns over food handling and storage practices at the establishment.

Cockroach infestation raises public health concerns

Inspectors found cockroach infestation and flies inside the kitchen. Officials said the presence of pests in food preparation areas posed a risk to public health and hygiene.

The kitchen floor was slippery and the drainage system was clogged with food waste. Storage containers and the wash area were also found in unhygienic condition.

Food handlers were working without masks and hairnets, violating food safety norms. Officials further noted that frozen food was not being thawed hygienically.

During document verification, the management failed to produce medical fitness records of employees and water analysis reports sought by the inspection team.

Restaurant scores poorly in hygiene assessment

The restaurant secured a hygiene score of 40 out of 116 during the inspection.

Officials said establishments scoring above 90 per cent are categorised as “Good”, while those scoring between 50 per cent and 90 per cent receive improvement notices. Scores below 50 per cent attract strict action, including show-cause notices and closure measures.

CMC Food Safety officials said inspections would continue across restaurants, eateries, kitchens and food establishments in and around Hyderabad to improve hygiene standards and protect public health.

Residents were advised to report food safety concerns through the MyCURE app or by tagging CMC officials on X for prompt action.
