HYDERABAD: The long-pending Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) rail extension from Secunderabad to Raigir near Yadadri is likely to be launched in April, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to formally inaugurate the project.

Railway authorities are awaiting confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office, even as preparatory work gathers pace. The project is part of MMTS Phase-II and is being executed by the South Central Railway.

Project sanctioned in phases, work to finish in three years

The ₹430 crore project was initially sanctioned in 2016–17 as a joint initiative between the railways and the state government. It was later taken up independently by the Centre, with funding released in phases.

The contract has been awarded to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, while land acquisition up to Raigir has already been completed. Officials have set a target of three years to complete the project and make it operational.

33-km stretch to include new lines, stations, electrification

The proposed 33-km corridor will connect Secunderabad to Raigir via Charlapalli and Ghatkesar. The scope includes laying new railway lines, doubling tracks where required, electrification, construction of new stations, and modernisation of existing infrastructure.

Once completed, the extension is expected to significantly ease travel for devotees visiting the Yadadri Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple. Passengers can travel by train up to Raigir and cover the remaining 4 km by road.

At present, most devotees rely on TGSRTC buses and private vehicles. The MMTS extension will enable direct connectivity from Lingampalli to Yadadri via Secunderabad. Commuters from Umdanagar and Medchal are also expected to benefit from improved suburban rail access.
