Miyapur police nabbed an interstate gang involved in saree theft

Hyderabad: In a major breakthrough, Miyapur police have arrested an interstate gang that posed as prospective buyers, deceiving shopkeepers and sales staff and stealing sarees worth lakhs of rupees.
Sharing details with reporters, Miyapur ACP Srinivas Kumar said several individuals from Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh had come together to form the gang, which was actively involved in a string of thefts.
According to the officer, the gang members met at a lodge at Yadadri where they planned a series of robberies. They specifically targeted shops with minimal staff to reduce the risk of getting caught and to carry out their thefts smoothly. They also involved female members who played a crucial role in the execution of these crimes.
As per the police, the modus operandi of the gang was simple. One member would engage the salesperson by asking to see sarees, while another would pack them into bags.
A few weeks ago, the gang targeted a saree shop in Miyapur Friends colony. The gang members visited the store pretending to buy sarees. At one point, they asked for a glass of water to divert the staff’s attention and made off with several expensive sarees. Following a complaint from the shop owner, the police registered a case and began an investigation which eventually led to the gang’s arrest.
The police official further said that the gang was involved in similar thefts at various textile shops in the jurisdictions of Miyapur, Madhura Nagar, Saroor Nagar, and Kukatpally police stations across the city.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Kanumuri Venkateswara Rao, a bullion trader from Ibrahimpatnam near Vijayawada, Katta Yashoda from G. Kondur in Krishna district, Kampa Ramana, Devarakonda Subhashini, Tirupatamma, Venkateswaramma, and Usuruganti Venkateswarulu from Jaggaiahpet. The accused persons have been taken into custody and remanded.
