Chain snatching accused held by Miyapur police in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Miyapur police arrested a 28-year-old cab driver for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a senior citizen in April 2026, officials said on April 18.
The accused was identified as Kothakota Govind Rao, a resident of Borabanda. Police said he hails from Tiddimi village in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.
The case was registered based on a complaint by Ganapatiraju Sathyavani, 65, who reported that the incident took place on April 12, 2026, around 06.30 IST during her morning walk near HUDA Park.
Woman attacked while plucking flowers near hospital
According to the complaint, Sathyavani was returning home when she stopped near Swastik Hospital to pluck flowers. An unidentified man on a motorcycle approached her from behind and attempted to snatch her mangalsutra.
When she resisted, the accused used force, snatched the chain, and fled. She sustained minor injuries to her neck in the incident. The complainant later informed her family and approached the police station.
Accused targeted women walking alone for quick money
Police said the accused targeted women who appeared to be alone. He allegedly committed multiple chain snatching offences within Miyapur and Ameenpur police station limits under the Cyberabad Commissionerate.
“The accused resorted to chain snatching to earn easy money and spent the proceeds on personal needs,” police said.
Technical evidence leads to arrest and recovery
Investigators traced the motorcycle used in the offence through its number plate using technical evidence. A police team then located the accused at his residence and took him into custody.
Police said they recovered stolen rolled gold chains from the accused.
Officials added that the work of the Miyapur police team was recognised and rewarded.
Police advise caution to prevent chain snatching
Police urged the public to avoid wearing heavy gold jewellery in public places, especially while travelling alone or during crowded events.
They advised people to keep chains concealed under clothing and remain alert on roadsides.
