Telugu language gets AI revolution: Meta, Bhashini, Telangana join forces

Hyderabad: In a path breaking collaboration, Meta and Bhashini are teaming up with the Telangana government to transform the landscape of artificial intelligence for local languages. These entities will support research, development, and deployment of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications that cater to local linguistic needs- Telugu people.
During the first day of AI Global Summit held in Hyderabad on Thursday, the Digital India Bhashini Division has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Telangana, marking a key milestone in advancing multilingual services across the state. Digital India Bhashini Division is an independent Division under Digital India Corporation.
“This collaboration aims to create inclusive digital solutions and advance technology in the region. Further aims to enhance the state’s multilingual capabilities, improve governance, and deliver more inclusive and efficient public services” said Bhashini through its official X(formerly twitter) Handle.
“Bhashini’s translation API will be integrated into a range of official platforms and services throughout the state,” said Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary for ITE&C, Telangana, announcing the partnership with Bhashini during AI Global Summit.
Language barrier breakthrough
Speaking on the occasion Jayesh Ranjan said “AI today is predominantly driven by English-language, but for India’s diversity, we need regional datasets like Telugu. This will drive local innovation and inclusivity”.
Bhashini aims to transcend language barriers, ensuring that every citizen can effortlessly access digital services in their own language. Using voice as a medium, Bhashini has the potential to bridge language as well as the digital divide. Launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in July 2022 under the National Language Technology Mission, Bhashini aims to provide technology translation services in 22 scheduled Indian languages.
According to the official website of Bhashini, their main objective is to “Create a knowledge-based society by transcending the language barriers and providing content and services to citizens, in their own language, both in the form of speech and text.”
“Bhashini’s translation API will be integrated into a range of official platforms and services throughout the state.”
