MeeSeva centres accepting new ration card applications, but there’s a catch

Listen to Story
News in short:
The Telangana government has re-enabled online applications for new ration cards through MeeSeva centers, according to AIMIM MLA Ahmed bin Abdullah Balala. This comes after the government initially stopped accepting new applications. The move is attributed to the efforts of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. The re-opening of the application facility coincides with the upcoming elections for the Telangana Legislative Council. The state government has emphasized that while applications are being accepted, new ration cards will only be issued after the poll code of conduct is lifted. The confusion surrounding the initial halt and subsequent re-opening of applications stemmed from a circular issued by the state government, which was later withdrawn.
Meeseva Centres Accepting Ration Card Applications With Conditions

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has re-enabled an online application facility through MeeSeva for the issuance of new food security (ration) cards, AIMIM MLA Ahmed bin Abdullah Balala said.

In a video statement, Balala said that the Congress government has reopened the online application facility through MeeSeva centres and urged the people to visit the nearest facility and apply for new ration cards.

The state is preparing to conduct polls to Graduates’ and two Teachers’ constituencies of Telangana Legislative Council on February 27, 2025 and as such model code of conduct (MCC) has been enforced in the state.

Earlier, the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Telangana C Sudharsan Reddy had denied media reports that the Election Commission of India (ECI) had stopped the issuance of ration cards through MeeSeva.

As per reports, the eligible candidates can apply for a new ration card or existing card holders can request for addition of new members. However, the ration card will be issued only after the poll code is lifted. Those who have applied for a new ration card during Praja Palana programme and Prajavani programmes need not apply again.

The confusion over receiving new applications for ration cards stems from the fact that a few days ago the state government had issued a circular requesting Electronic Service Delivery (ESD) to enable MeeSeva centres to accept applications for new ration cards and subsequently withdrew its order on Saturday.
