Meerpet murder: Hyderabad police cite affair motive

Listen to Story

HYDERABAD: A major twist has emerged in the Meerpet Madhavi murder case, with police telling the court that the accused husband killed his wife over an extramarital relationship with his sister-in-law.

Scientific evidence presented to court

Police said they placed scientific evidence before the court to establish that Putta Gurumurthy, 39, murdered his wife Venkata Madhavi, 35. Investigators concluded that Madhavi opposed Gurumurthy’s extramarital relationship, which led to repeated quarrels and ultimately the crime.

Confession and background

The case began in January after Madhavi’s mother lodged a missing complaint at Meerpet police station. During the probe, Gurumurthy admitted to killing his wife, police said. A former Army jawan, he was working as a security guard at the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Crime details and charges

Police said Gurumurthy strangled Madhavi to death, dismembered the body, cooked parts in a pressure cooker, ground the bones and disposed of the remains in a pond at Jillelaguda. Investigators seized material evidence from the house, including a stove, knife, roller, water heater and clothes. He has been booked for murder and for destroying evidence.

Despite concerns that the absence of recoverable body parts could weaken the case, police said they collected scientific evidence and submitted it to the court. The investigation concluded that the murder was committed solely due to the extramarital relationship.
