Congress gains edge in Rangareddy, BRS holds ground in Medchal–Malkajgiri municipal polls

HYDERABAD: The municipal poll results across Medchal–Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts have produced a politically competitive and regionally divided verdict, with local factors shaping voter behaviour.
In Medchal–Malkajgiri district, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) demonstrated organisational strength, converting its ground-level network into clear or near-majority outcomes in key municipalities. However, in Rangareddy district, the Congress secured a broader advantage, winning control in three of six municipalities.
Medchal–Malkajgiri: BRS advantage
In Aliyabad municipality (20 wards), no party secured the majority mark of 11 seats. The Congress won eight seats, followed by BRS with seven, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with three, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with one, and one Independent. With the Congress emerging as the single largest party but short of a majority, the council remains hung and post-poll alliances will determine control.
Muduchinthlapally municipality (24 wards) delivered a clear mandate to BRS. The party secured 14 seats, crossing the majority mark of 13. The Congress won nine seats and the BJP one. BRS is set to form the council independently.
In Yellampet municipality (24 wards), BRS won 12 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 13. The Congress secured eight seats and the BJP four. Though short by one seat, BRS emerged as the single largest party and is expected to seek support to form the council.
Across the three municipalities, covering 68 wards, BRS secured a clear majority in one and emerged as the leading party in the other two, indicating an advantage in the district.
Rangareddy: Congress consolidates gains
In Amangal municipality (15 wards), BRS won eight seats, just meeting the majority requirement. The BJP secured six seats and the Congress one, enabling BRS to form the council.
Chevella municipality (18 wards) returned a decisive verdict for the Congress, which won 11 seats, crossing the majority mark of 10. BRS secured four seats and the BJP three.
Ibrahimpatnam municipality (24 wards) gave BRS an exact majority with 13 seats. The Congress won eight seats, the BJP two, and one seat went to an Independent.
Moinabad municipality (26 wards, with 25 results declared) produced a fractured mandate. The Congress secured 10 seats, BRS six, BJP four, and Independents five. With 14 seats required for a majority, no party crossed the threshold. Independents are likely to play a key role in government formation.
In Shadnagar municipality (28 wards), the Congress won 15 seats, meeting the majority mark. BRS secured 11 seats, while the BJP and an Independent won one seat each.
Shankarpally municipality (15 wards) also favoured the Congress, which won nine seats, surpassing the majority mark of eight. BRS secured four seats and Independents two.
Of the six municipalities in Rangareddy district, the Congress secured clear control in Chevella, Shadnagar and Shankarpally, while BRS won Amangal and Ibrahimpatnam. Moinabad remains hung.
Competitive landscape
Taken together, the results indicate the absence of a uniform wave across the region. While BRS retained strength in parts of Medchal–Malkajgiri, the Congress established a broader edge in Rangareddy. The presence of hung councils in Aliyabad and Moinabad highlights the role of Independents and post-poll negotiations in determining control of civic bodies.
The BJP registered a presence in several municipalities but did not secure control of any council in the two districts.
