Eight students bitten by rats at Medak Gurukul hostel

MEDAK: Eight Intermediate students at a Telangana Tribal Welfare Residential School for Girls near Narayanapur in Narsapur mandal, Medak district, were bitten by rats on Friday night. Several others developed skin allergies, hostel staff said.
The incident occurred at the girls’ hostel on the school campus. After dinner on Thursday night, the students went to bed, only to wake up on Friday morning with rat bite injuries. Eight students suffered visible wounds, while others reported skin irritation.
Hostel staff took the affected students to the Narsapur government hospital, where they were given first aid.
“The rats are troubling everyone — even I am not spared,” said school principal Lalitha Devi. She added that rats and monkeys often enter the hostel and have even scratched students. Two days ago, three snakes were spotted within the campus, she said.
Lalitha Devi also noted that 540 students stay in the hostel, which lacks adequate facilities. “There is not enough space for everyone to sleep,” she said, adding that the hostel’s location amid fields and near forested areas attracts rodents and snakes. She said she had reported these issues to higher officials.
