Medak sees rise in thefts despite police patrols

Telangana : Burglars continue to strike across Medak district, targeting locked houses, business establishments and farm equipment despite regular night patrols by the police.

On May 14, thieves broke into five houses at Cheelampalli village in Peddashankarampet mandal and stole about 100 tolas of gold ornaments and 2.5 kg of silver jewellery. It was the biggest property theft reported in the district in recent years.

In another incident on June 18, unidentified persons broke the lock of a house at Koyyagundu Tanda under Peerlathanda gram panchayat in Kowdipally mandal and stole ₹10,000 in cash and gold ornaments weighing about 20 tolas.

On June 25, unidentified persons damaged irrigation controllers in agricultural fields at Dantanpally village in Shivampet mandal and stole 240 litres of oil and copper wire.

Burglars conduct reconnaissance before striking

Police said burglars first identify locked houses and conduct reconnaissance before entering them at night. With gold prices rising, many families keep jewellery at home, especially after returning from family functions. Investigators believe the accused identify such houses and target them.

Recovery remains low

Victims continue to face delays in recovering stolen property. In 2025, the district reported 607 theft cases involving property and cash worth ₹2.43 crore. Police recovered only ₹99 lakh. The trend has continued this year. Although special teams are investigating the cases and arresting suspects, stolen jewellery is often sold and cash spent before recovery.

Police investigations suggest that unemployment has pushed some people towards theft. Habitual offenders and those addicted to alcohol are also involved in several cases. Migrant workers from other states have figured in some investigations. Police said several recent cases involved repeat offenders who had previously served jail terms.

Superintendent of Police D.V. Srinivasa Rao said police were conducting regular patrols in every police station limits, with Circle Inspector-rank officers supervising patrols in urban areas. He advised residents planning to travel to inform the local police station so that additional attention could be given to their neighbourhoods. He also urged people not to keep large quantities of cash or gold at home and to take adequate precautions before locking their houses.
