Why MEA Denied Revanth Reddy’s US Visit: What Was Wrong With His Proposed Programme?

HYDERABAD: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has denied political clearance for Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s proposed US visit.
The ministry said the proposed programme did not suit the office he holds or the purpose of the visit.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks during the ministry’s bi-weekly media briefing on Friday.
“Let me say that the visit of Chief Ministers, as indeed of other dignitaries, are assessed by the Ministry of External Affairs in order to accord political clearance,” Jaiswal said.
“The programme proposed in such cases should be appropriate to the office held and the purpose of the visit. In this particular case, that was not so in respect of the United States, and therefore the clearance was denied, not given,” he added.
MEA clears UK visit
Jaiswal said the MEA had cleared Reddy’s proposed visit to the United Kingdom.
“Incidentally, let me also tell you that clearance was given for his visit to the United Kingdom,” he said.
Reddy had planned to visit both the US and the UK. However, the US leg could not go ahead after the MEA denied political clearance.
The ministry did not explain which parts of the US programme it found inappropriate.
It also did not disclose whether Reddy’s proposed meetings, events or other engagements led to the decision.
